What Am I Doing?

As an author, educator, presenter, and writing mentor, I have several irons in the fire at any given time. Here are the most important updates.

October 4, 2018: What an incredible experience the past month and a half have been! It's been a little overwhelming to have my YouTube channel grow so fast and it's thrown me a little off-balance. My task this month is to get my feet solidly under myself so I can tackle NaNoWriMo. This might be the first year since 2009 that I haven't worked on an original novel during the month. I'm still not sure what my project will be, but at this time I'm leaning toward the goal of giving my first novel a deep edit so I can prepare it for publication in early 2019.

August 23, 2018: Excited that my Truthification Chronicles YouTube channel hit 100 subscribers! It's definitely growing, and the more videos I put out, the more it'll grow.

March 21, 20187: I took the plunge and posted my first video on my Truthification Chronicles YouTube channel. It wasn't much, but just an oddity I noticed when I tried to sign a White House website petition to have an Internet Bill of Rights (IBOR). I'm not sure which direction I want to take this channel, but I know it will deal directly with politics. My Garden Devotions channel will stay with gardening and crafting. It's become more of a vlog than the TC one will be.

November 30, 2017: Another NaNoWriMo under my belt, but my book is far from being finished. I struggled this time, mostly because of the dark nature of the subject. Some scenes required more emotional energy than I'm used to, and I needed frequent breaks. When I write, I get caught up in that world and child sex trafficking will never be a good world to spend much time in. All I can hope is that this novel wakes people up to what's going on in our world.

October 23, 2017: I'm preparing for November's NaNoWriMo novel by researching child trafficking. I've put it off until now because the subject is such a difficult one, and I get incensed to think there are people who are so evil they can reduce children to mere pawns in their money and power schemes. As a writer, I need to give myself as much of the picture as possible to fuel that righteous outrage so it comes out well in my novel. I hope in some way that my novel will open up the eyes of people who never imagined such an evil could exist. The challenge to me as a Christian writer is to write it in a way that doesn't push the reader into gruesome details, but so the reader will be driven to take action against it.

May 29, 2017: I uploaded my first Garden Devotions video. The old computer system is definitely a factor I'll need to remedy if I want to do timely videos (as I'd need to do for the Truthification Chronicles channel). I don't know how long this desktop (running Windows Vista, yes, really) will continue to function.

April 17, 2017: I intended to start a Truthification Chronicles YouTube channel, but God had other plans for me. To produce the type of product I'd like to (a video version of my blog content), it would require more energy (and a better computer) than I have at this moment. Instead, I started the Garden Devotions channel to share biblical insights I get while gardening. I'm still in a period of post-exertional malaise cause by caring for my dog, so this channel was an easier choice at the time. I hope to get the Truthification Chronicles channel up and running by 2018.

November 30, 2016: I struggled this month with keeping up my word count. My energy is at an all-time low, but I pushed through it and finished 50,000 words of Unveiled. It took me a different direction than I'd planned back in January, but I'm pleased with the direction it's going. There's still a lot of fill in work to do, because I needed to write some of the more exciting scenes of the climax to get my word count in on time.

November 1, 2016: NaNoWriMo starts today. My heart is still shattered from losing Renny and I feel a bit lost because so much of my life and routine revolved around caring for her, especially at the end. This is going to be a difficult Nano, but I hope the new story will help keep my mind off of losing her.

October 27, 2016: My beloved 16-year-old dog, Renny, passed away today. As her health declined over the past year, I've been journaling our experiences. In her honor, I will compile them all into a memoir.

March 15, 2016: Now my major focus is turning toward Book 3. Although I had the first 50K done in November 2013, life events kept me from finishing it (as you can probably tell from Book 4, it takes me more than just one month to do the first draft). The events are completely outlined and some scenes in the second half are partially written, but the entire novel needs layering and smoothing out. My tentative goal is to have the first draft completed by the end of July.

February 19, 2016: The first draft of Book 4 in The Truthification Chronicles series is done. Yay! I still have a few scenes I'll need to add in, and I have layering to do, but the storyline is now set. In my opinion, it's the best of the four. At this point, I don't intend to write another book in the series, but that might change once the four books are published. No spoilers, but I will say the ending of Book 4 does have the potential for a future book. I'd always intended for this to be the final book. Hey, I'm flexible. We'll see how it all goes!

January 13, 2016: I officially started my research for my 2016 NaNoWriMo novel. I don't have a title yet, but it will be about a family who loses their children to the Norwegian child protective services (the Barnevernet) under the accusation of Christian indoctrination. Based on a true story that is happening right now to the Bodnariu family.

December 7, 2015: Over the years I've noticed a strong need for new writers to see their first few pages through the eyes of a prospective editor. This date was the debut of the first two services, the Novel Starter and the Novel Kick-Off packages. More services are in the works, including the Ten-Point Novel Tune-Up, which offers new writers a chance to go through lessons on the ten most important points to give their novel the best chance at being read by an editor.

November 1, 2015: I started the first draft for book 4 in The Truthification Chronicles series.

October 20, 2015: I conducted a free webinar on Getting Started with Scrivener.

September 21, 2015: I completed a short story, Controlled Experiment, that is a prequel to The Family Secret. In this short story, underdog teen Alexander Daley's life changes forever when he's invited to join Project Empowerment's summer program to learn Romanian under the tutelage of prodigy Victoria Pavlenco. But is the program all it claims to be? Or will Alex face a reality he never imagined?

August 11, 2015: I conducted a free webinar on the Top Ten Things I Love About Scrivener.

June 15, 2015: Renaissance 2040, the second book in The Truthification Chronicles series, was chosen as a finalist in the speculative category of the ACFW Genesis Contest. Book 1, The Family Secret, made it to the semi-finals, but was a few points shy of the finals.

June 3, 2015: The Truthification Chronicles Blog kicked off on a more regular basis.

June 3-6, 2015: I attended the Write to Publish writers conference. I enjoyed meeting old friends and new writers, as well as learning more about the craft of writing.

October 1, 2014: I took on the responsibility of facilitating the orientation for the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) critique group orientation class. It's been a great chance at the beginning of each month to guide new writers as they learn how valuable a good critique can be.

The Truthification Chronicles blog pairs with the six-novel Truthification Chronicles series as a unique blend of political intrigue grounded in biblical truth.
